Engine Support Option

The KEP and Small Car engine supports work very well. However, for those of us who always have to be tinkering around here are some pictures of a engine support that I fabricated using part of the stock Subaru cross member.

Bottom view showing cross member after being cut in half (length wise) to eliminate some of the surplus Subaru front suspension facilities and metal that was not needed. You can also see the adapter bracket that bolts to the Vanagon frame. Also worth noting is the adapter brackets that provide the 1 inch offset (to the passenger side) from centre line - per WBS engine mount. The cutout in the cross member is to accommodate the exhaust header - this area was reinforced to compensate for the cutout.

This a top view as it would fit in the van - looking from the rear. You can see my reinforcing that I added. This arrangement provides excellent support for the engine - Subaru's nice big pads for the rubber engine supports.

Detail of driver side bracket. Bolted to the frame using two of the stock vanagon bolt holes plus one additional horizontal bolt that was drilled in after the bracket was fit on the frame.

I have had this support on my 86 8 passenger for the past 3 years and it is performing very well - no problems that I know of.

NOTE: Use these ideas at you own risk - no warranty or guarantee implied or included.  Tom
