If you have ever sat in the
rear of your vanagon with the engine bay cover off and watched
the engine movement, as you have someone drive over some very
rough areas on the road, - you will know how much the engine
and tranny tranny teeter totter over the engine support. This
is not quite so sever with an automatic tranny but is quite
significant with a manual tranny.
The following pictures give you an idea of what I have done
to virtually eliminate this movement:
Using my muffler support (Muffler
Support) - I have used one of the Subaru
tranny damper - with small top bushing cut off and rod
threaded and bolted to the muffler support. This provides a
damper that bolts to the stock Vanagon cross memeber. See next
picture
In the pictures above - you
can also see my SS exhaust header and 2 inch oval CAT (
Exhaust System
).
To provide balanced damping,
I added one of my muffler support brackets on the driver side
and another one of the Subaru tranny dampers. In this picture
you can also see my SS muffler ( Exhaust System
).
My vanagons are all
automatics and this damper arrangement has worked very well.
We also fitted it on Laurence's manual tranny Westy with very
similar results.
